Dominic Kinnear returns to Houston as San Jose Earthquakes head coach for the first time in a Western Conference clash at BBVA Compass Stadium on Tuesday night. Both teams are part of a four-way tie for sixth place in the Western Conference, and both teams played last Friday night.

  • Houston surrendered four goals for the second consecutive home match, falling 4-1 to rival FC Dallas despite a 13-6 shot advantage. Giles Barnes curled in a free kick to make it a 2-1 game at halftime, but FC Dallas continued to be clinical on the counter to win going away behind one goal and two assists each from Fabián Castillo and Mauro Díaz. Houston have just one win in their last eight games.
  • San Jose earned a 1-1 tie on the road against Real Salt Lake last Friday, going ahead on a contested first-half goal from Chris Wondolowski before a Victor Bernardez own goal in the second half gave Real Salt Lake a share of the spoils.
  • Houston lead the all-time series between the clubs 6-5-1. San Jose won their last meeting, in California on May 25, 2014, by a 3-0 score. It was the first time in seven seasons that the Earthquakes won the season series between the teams. San Jose last won in Houston in 2010.
  • Kinnear posted a 112-90-86 regular-season record and 14-8-6 playoff record coaching Houston's first nine seasons, leading the club to two MLS Cup championships (2006, 2007), four conference championships (2006, 2007, 2011, 2012), two first-place regular-season finishes (2008, 2009) and two appearances in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup semifinals (2007, 2008). A former player and assistant coach for San Jose, he had coached the Earthquakes in 2004-05 before the club moved to Houston, winning the 2005 Supporters' Shield.
