The San Jose Earthquakes' appeal against the red card issued to forward Mark Sherrod in last Sunday's game against FC Dallas has been denied by an independent review panel, MLS announced on Friday.
Sherrod was shown the red card by referee Baldomero Toledo for a 53rd-minute foul on Dallas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy (watch above). The panel, consisting of one representative each from the U.S. Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and Professional Referees Organization (PRO), was not unanimous that Toledo had made a serious and obvious error in the send-off.
As a result, Sherrod will serve his one-match suspension and will miss San Jose’s next MLS match against the Seattle Sounders on June 20 at CenturyLink Field (4 pm ET, MLS LIVE).
Per league policy, the San Jose Earthquakes will have one more unsuccessful appeal for any send-off review during the 2015 season.
