Philly's Santos takes home POTW for Week 20

Sergio Santos - Philadelphia Union - goal celebration

After his best MLS game to date, Philadelphia Union forward Sergio Santos has earned MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 20 of the regular season.

Santos bagged a hat trick in last weekend’s 5-0 demolishing of Toronto FC, which moved the Union atop the Supporters’ Shield race and within three games of their first major trophy.

The Brazilian forward twice benefited from crosses by Kai Wagner, starting in the 27th minute to open a 1-0 lead. There was then a repeat sequence in the 63rd minute, with Santos one-timing home for a 4-0 lead.

The 26-year-old’s incredible performance was capped by a 68th-minute strike, which made it 5-0 and capped off a Brenden Aaronson-led counterattack with another deft left-footed finish. Check out all three goals below:

Santos now has seven goals and two assists in 18 games (14 starts) this season. He only had four goals in 2019 upon arriving from Chilean club Audax Italiano, but has really come into his own this year while often partnering with Kacper Przybylko up top.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
