FC Cincinnati signed veteran defender Raymon “Ray” Gaddis to a contract through 2023, with an option for the 2024 season, on January 5, 2022. Gaddis, the Philadelphia Union’s all-time appearance and minutes leader, announced his retirement the conclusion of the 2020 season, remained very active off the pitch in his native Indianapolis. Gaddis was a founding member of MLS’ Black Players for Change in 2020 and is a key member of the Black Players Coalition.
2022 (FC Cincinnati): Made 23 appearances, including 11 starts, in his first season with FC Cincinnati and in coming out of retirement … started and played the full 90 minutes in the season opener at Austin FC … started and played the full 90 six more times throughout the season, including against his former club on June 18 at Philadelphia Union, as well as in a 1-0 clean sheet victory on June 24 vs. Orlando City … made his fifth career MLS Cup Playoff appearance as a substitute in Round One of the postseason at New York Red Bulls, where he helped close out the victory, entering in stoppage time … was named FC Cincinnati’s Humanitarian of the Year presented by Proctor & Gamble for his efforts giving back to the Cincinnati community and of his hometown of Indianapolis.
2020 (Philadelphia Union): Gaddis made 15 appearances (15 starts) for the Union at right back ... Helped the Union secure a 1-0 victory over NYCFC (July 9), the first shutout of the season ... Became the first player in Union history to make 200 starts, after playing 90 minutes in the 2-1 victory over Inter Miami (July 14) ... Helped secure a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over New England Revolution (July 25) to send the Union to the MLS is Back Quarterfinals ... Registered his first assist of the season and helped keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win against the New York Red Bulls (August 25)...helped the team to another shutout win against Red Bulls (September 6)...started and aided in a clean sheet draw at FC Cincinnati (September 23).
2019 (Philadelphia Union): Gaddis made 34 appearances (34 starts) for the Union, with 32 at rightback and two at leftback, starting every regular-season match ... tied Sebastien Le Toux for the all-time club lead with his 175th Union appearance by starting at Atlanta (March 17) ... subsequently broke that record with a start vs. Columbus (March 23), becoming the Union's career leader in appearances, starts and minutes ... made his first appearance of the year at leftback at Vancouver (April 27) ... became the first Union player to ever reach 200 regular-season appearances when he hit the milestone vs. D.C. United (August 24) ... recorded his first assist of the season on Alejandro Bedoya's equalizing goal at San Jose (September 25) ... made one appearance in the Open Cup, coming on as a substitute in the Fourth Round match at D.C. United (June 12).
2018 (Philadelphia Union): Gaddis made 28 regular-season appearances (25 starts), with 26 appearances at leftback and two at rightback, recording two assists. He made his season debut by coming on as a substitute at leftback for an injured Fabinho vs. Columbus (March 17). He recorded his 150th appearance for Philadelphia by coming on at Columbus (May 9), becoming the third player in team history to reach that milestone (Sebastien Le Toux, Brian Carroll). Gaddis earned his first assist of the season on Cory Burke's goal at Montreal (May 12). He became the second player in Union history to reach 150 starts (Brian Carroll) by earning the nod at Chicago (July 11). He became the Union's all-time leader in minutes played as part of another clean sheet effort vs. New England (August 25), and he tied the Union's all-time record for starts made (156) during a third consecutive clean sheet performance, at D.C. United (August 29). He broke that record in the Union's next match at Orlando (September 1). He started the team's Knockout Round match at NYCFC (October 31). In the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Gaddis made four appearances (four starts) at leftback.
2017 (Philadelphia Union): Gaddis made 26 appearances (23 starts) for the Union in 2017 (24 appearances at rightback, two at leftback), registering one assist. He made his first appearance of the season vs. Montreal (April 22) with a start at rightback and notched his first assist of the year vs. D.C. United (June 24). He also made one appearance in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
2016 (Philadelphia Union): Gaddis made seven appearances for the Union in 2016 (five starts), with one assist.
2015 (Philadelphia Union): The defender made 28 appearances in his fourth MLS season, contributing one assist for the Union. Like in 2014, he was a critical component in the Union’s run to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final. He played in every minute of every match, including the final as Philadelphia finished runners-up.
2014 (Philadelphia Union): Gaddis played and started every match for the Union in 2014, leading all field players in minutes played league-wide that season, with 3,051. He totaled two assists in league play for Philadelphia. He also appeared three times in the U.S. Open Cup, including in the final, when he played all 120 minutes in the loss to Seattle.
2013 (Philadelphia Union): Gaddis’ role expanded in 2013 as he made 31 appearances during his sophomore season, playing all but three matches. He also appeared in two U.S. Open Cup contests.
2012 (Philadelphia Union): After being drafted by the Union in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft 35th overall, Gaddis made 18 appearances for the team, registering one assist. His debut came on April 14, 2012 against Columbus, with his first helper on June 23, 2012 against Sporting KC as part of a 4-0 win.
COLLEGE (West Virginia): A standout with the Mountaineers, he was honored as a 2011 College Soccer News second team preseason All-America and a member of the all-Big East preseason squad. In 2011, Gaddis was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for the second straight season, making him the only West Virginia player to ever be featured on the list for two seasons. In 2010 he was named third team All-American by TopDrawerSoccer.com, and earned second team all-Big East honors. In 2009, Gaddis was a first-team selection on the NSCAA all-Northeast Region squad.
